This project has had various challenges and problems but, it
has taught me the importance of planning and time keeping. During the time of
this project I was also putting my portfolio for university interviews together
which I found very hard to do alongside this project.
I found looking at
different concepts to be very interesting due to the fact that there was so
much freedom to explore and experiment with new mediums. I feel like this
project has helped me to become a better designer as I have learnt that you can
see and create art out of a lot of things that surround you. It has also helped
me to gain a better understanding of how to work in my chosen specialism,
Graphic Design.
My favourite part of this project was designing 5 design
sheets by looking and receipts. At first I thought receipts were very boring
but once I looked at them and picked out details, I started to produce ideas
which eventually lead to combining some of the concepts and aspect of a
receipts together. The part I found most fascinating about the receipts were
the barcodes and the number combinations. I found these interesting because,
they formed and interesting pattern. I wasn’t looking at the numbers as just
numbers, I was looking at how they could form a pattern by looking at the
negative and positive space. I also looked at how the patterns from the
barcodes could be made into an image. This helped me to come up with my final
outcome.
I found the concepts identity and time to be very
interesting. After exploring the two concepts, I realised they could linked together
quite nicely. What I enjoyed most about identity is that there are various
things that can be used to identify an object or a person. These include finger
prints, eyes, socialisation and gender. This then brought me to thinking about
the human face. I thought about how we identify people by their face, so I produced
a drawing but I didn’t include the face. All that was there was the hair and
shoulders, with this little information about the person, the viewer is unsure
about features such as eye colour or whether the person is male or female.
After I explored these sections, I came up with a final
outcome using Photoshop. I produced a zoomed in image of a human eye to
represent identity, a barcode over the eye because this represent the identity
of an item and then I added the concept of time. I found that these linked
nicely together and I am very happy with the final outcome.
The part I struggled with the most was getting started with
the project. This was due to how open the brief was as I am quite used to
having a very structured brief. I also found the development of pervious work to
be hard because, I was unsure where I should start and I didn’t know how to do
it. I feel like this pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me to develop
my skills further.
